Slovakia Rejects EU Plan to Use Frozen Russian Assets for Ukraine’s Military Costs. Slovakia says it won’t support using frozen Russian assets to pay for Ukraine’s defense - According to Politico. Prime Minister Robert Fico told Slovakia’s public broadcaster that his country “won’t take part in any legal or financial schemes” if the funds are meant for military spending in Kyiv. The European Union is working on a plan to use profits from frozen Russian assets to offer Ukraine a 140-billion-euro loan — a move seen as vital for maintaining IMF support to Kyiv. But the idea has raised financial and legal concerns, especially from Belgium, where most of the assets are held. Fico, known for opposing EU actions against Moscow, has often used his veto threats to gain political concessions. EU leaders are expected to revisit the issue at their December summit as divisions persist over whether these funds should finance Ukraine’s war effort or be used for other types of aid.
