China: New energy vehicles exceed 50 pct of October auto sales for first time: association
Storyline: China's new energy vehicle (NEV) market hit another milestone in October, with monthly sales accounting for more than half of the country's total new car sales for the first time, according to data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers on Tuesday. The latest figures showed that from January to October, China's automobile production and sales reached 27.692 million and 27.687 million units, respectively, both up by more than 10 percent year on year. Among them, NEV production hit 13.015 million units, while sales reached 12.943 million units, marking robust growth of 33.1 percent and 32.7 percent year over year, respectively. Notably, in October, NEVs accounted for 51.6 percent of all new car sales nationwide, making the first time that the monthly penetration rate has exceeded the 50-percent threshold. From January to October, China exported 2.014 million NEVs, representing a sharp 90.4 percent year-on-year increase, the association data showed. "Since the start of this year, China's NEV market has been growing at a fast pace. On the one hand, the automobile trade-in program has been showing continuous, sufficient and broad effects, helping boost the fast growth of the NEV market. On the other hand, since the purchase tax on vehicles will be cut by half next year, some customers are buying cars ahead of schedule, resulting in a new round of consumption boom in the NEV market," said Chen Shihua, the association's deputy secretary general.
