China: China's heavy truck market extends growth streak as green transition accelerates
Storyline: China's heavy truck market has notched seven consecutive months of growth since April, with full-year sales expected to surpass one million units, as new energy vehicles emerge as a key driver of the sector's expansion. According to the latest report by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, the commercial vehicle sector reported over 3.4 million units in both production and sales during the January-October period, up 10.9 percent and 9 percent year on year respectively. New energy and clean-energy heavy trucks are increasingly powering this growth. "The vehicle trade-in policy has served as a catalyst for the heavy-duty truck market's recovery this year, while also accelerating industry-wide structural upgrades. Key drivers of the new energy transition include energy efficiency, Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), and the convenience of charging and battery-swapping facilities," said Liang Zhaowen, vice president of Beiqi Foton Motor. Cities including Wuzhou, Shijiazhuang, and Yinchuan have deployed gas and electric heavy trucks in resource transport and regional logistics, supporting the industry's shift toward lower costs and greener operations. Zhu Hong, vice president of Chery Commercial Vehicle, highlighted the technological progress. "With a 400-kWh battery capacity and a highly efficient 2.5-ton range extender, we are breaking through the range anxiety associated with new energy heavy-duty trucks. At the same time, we've achieved the optimal oil-to-electricity ratio to meet operational demands," he said. As pure electric and hydrogen fuel cell technologies mature, new energy trucks are rapidly entering core logistics scenarios. In September 2025, the penetration rate of new energy commercial vehicles exceeded 30 percent for the first time, signaling a new phase of scaled development. "The continuous sales growth in China's heavy-duty truck market in 2025 can be attributed to the combined effect of multiple factors, including equipment renewal policies, infrastructure investment, and energy strategy, which have injected strong momentum into the market. This growth trend is expected to continue," said Chen Shihua, deputy secretary general of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. Supported by national policies, technological breakthroughs, and infrastructure development, the heavy truck industry is transitioning toward greener, more efficient, and higher-quality development.
