Turkish military plane crashes in mountains in Georgia leaving several feared dead
A Turkish military plane crashed in remote mountains in Georgia this afternoon, leaving those on board feared dead.
The Lockheed C-130 Hercules C-130 cargo plane had left Azerbaijan and was returning to Turkey when it experienced difficulties.
Footage appeared to show the aircraft spiralling down and leaving a trail of white smoke before hitting the ground.
Officials launched search and rescue operations.
Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said there were casualties but did not say how many people were inside the plane.
He said he was 'deeply saddened' by the incident.
Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev added: 'We were deeply saddened by the tragic news of the loss of servicemen in the crash of a Turkish Air Force military cargo plane, which took off from Ganja and crashed in Georgian territory.
'In this moment of sorrow, I share your grief and, on behalf of myself and the people of Azerbaijan, extend heartfelt condolences to you, the families and loved ones of the deceased, and the fraternal people of Turkey.'
