Heroic Range Rover driver rams knife-wielding man as he attacks police outside bank in China
On 12 November, outside the Agricultural Bank of China Training Centre in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, a man dressed in black confronted police while brandishing a knife about 30 centimetres long. Despite repeated calls from officers, the man grew increasingly agitated and repeatedly swung the knife at them.
At that moment, a driver in a Range Rover happened to be passing by. Acting decisively, he reversed his vehicle, then drove forward and struck the knife-wielding man, knocking him to the ground and helping officers subdue him.
Police later stated that the specific cause of the incident could not be disclosed. The injured man was taken to hospital by emergency medical staff and was confirmed to be in stable condition. Officials clarified that the on-site response was led by the police and that the Range Rover driver’s intervention was a spontaneous act by a citizen.
Authorities have so far avoided commenting on the legal classification of the driver’s actions, and have not confirmed whether he will be recognised as having acted bravely for a just cause.
A lawyer noted that since the man was armed with a knife, ignored police commands, and posed an immediate threat, the situation was urgent. The driver’s decision to hit him with the car constituted an act of justifiable defence, meaning the driver should not bear civil or other legal liability for the suspect’s injuries.
