China: World-leading innovations reshape China's film production
Storyline: World-leading innovations reshape China's film production [Voice_over] China's film industry is undergoing a massive digital technology transformation that is reshaping every aspect of the sector. In "A Writer's Odyssey Ⅱ," this year's sequel to the 2021 fantasy-action hit, characters seem to disappear in a data glitch. A movie studio manager explained how the effect was achieved using a mobile 3D scanning unit. [Sound_bite] Yu Qiubei, technology manager, China Movie Metropolis: "This device is called a mobile vehicle-mounted scanning array, consisting of 150 cameras. Actors simply need to stand in front of the camera array to quickly generate high-precision character models." [Voice_over] The industry has seen other exciting advancements in the realm of digital technology. In southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, the country's first smart scene-setting studio uses massive, curved LED screens that can be changed with the click of a button. The scene-setting studio has been a major boon to sci-fi films, reducing the cost of large-scale scenes for the genre by 90 percent. [Sound_bite] Chen Liang, vice president, Dawa (Chongqing) Imaging Technology Company: "With our mechanized devices, we can achieve rapid scene changes and transitions. After the production team finishes shooting a scene, they can quickly switch to a new scene using the 360-degree movable turntables in front, greatly enhancing shooting efficiency." [Voice_over] Official data shows that over the eight-day National Day Holiday in October, which is notoriously busy for theatres, Chinese box offices brought in roughly 258 million U.S. dollars.
