Terrifying footage shows the moment several huge waves suddenly hit the promenade in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, sweeping several people into the sea.

The filmer told Newsflare: "I was walking along the promenade in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, during an extreme weather event with unusually powerful waves. Suddenly, several huge waves hit the promenade, sweeping multiple people into the water.

"I started recording a moment before the largest wave struck, and the footage shows people being knocked off their feet and carried into the sea. I was standing safely behind the wall when filming.

"After the wave hit, I assisted in helping the people who were in the water. One woman was unconscious when we reached her and had to be pulled out and handed over to the emergency services."
