This Massive School of Tens of Thousands of Rays is Possibly the Largest Group of Rays Ever Filmed.

The rays are Cownose Rays. Seeing this many rays in the ocean was one of the most awesome nature or wildlife moments I've experienced. I was able to track and film the group for 7 weeks in the Gulf of Mexico in Florida. The footage was taken in 6k high resolution so I was able to isolate screen shots from the video in order to overlay a grid pattern on the images, zoom in, and get a fairly accurate count of the rays. I was able to count 65,000 rays in the group (also called a fever) but the water was 20-25 feet deep and visibility was only about 5-7 feet. The rays extended all the way to the bottom so I'm sure there were at least twice as many rays as I was able to count at the surface. I'm estimating the real number to be at least 100,000. I've been filming and documenting these large groups of rays and other marine animals for well over a decade and this is by far the largest group I've seen. I also believe this amazing wildlife gathering to be the largest group of rays ever filmed. The original footage is available in dlog in 6k at 60 fps.
