UNCAPTIONED: Antonio Banderas 'absolutely reeked' of fish filming Anthony Bourdain biopic
Antonio Banderas 'absolutely reeked' of fish filming Anthony Bourdain biopic. During a recent appearance at the Torino Film Festival in Italy, the Spanish actor opened up about playing Bourdain's mentor, alongside Dominic Sessa as a younger version of the late chef and TV personality. According to Variety, he shared that he had a particularly smelly experience while shooting scenes in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. ”We spent a month and a half filming in Cape Cod and Newport, constantly surrounded by the smell of fish," he laughed. "Every time I came back to the hotel, I had to shower because I absolutely reeked - I was cleaning fish every single day!” The upcoming movie positions the chef-turned-globetrotter as an aimless young man and explores the "very difficult early years of his life” during which he suffered from depression and drug addiction. The Mask of Zorro star plays a Brazilian-born restaurateur who takes the young Tony under his wing. However, he is not playing Ciro Cozzi, the real restaurateur who hired Bourdain, but rather more of a composite character inspired by several people. ”Through this relationship, Tony begins to truly learn how to cook," Banderas said. "So the film is not just about cuisine or culinary techniques; it's about his life, his identity, and his way of being - shaped by this unique mentor.” Tony stars The Holdovers breakout actor Sessa, 23, alongside Leo Woodall and Emilia Jones. The film, directed by Matt Johnson, does not yet have a release date. Bourdain died by suicide in 2018 at the age of 61.
