Hotel staff 'caught on camera stealing from tourist’s bag' in Bali
A hotel employee was allegedly caught on camera sneaking into a tourist's room and stealing from his bag in Bali.
Backpacker Aatu Saari from Finland said he had been checked in for just an hour when his hidden camera recorded a woman entering his room in Denpasar City, Indonesia on October 15.
Footage shows the dark room as the door opened and the female worker walked inside. She headed directly to a black backpack, searched through its contents, and appeared to pocket banknotes lying beside it.
The woman, allegedly a staff member at the accommodation, left the room in under a minute.
Aatu said: 'In the video you can see a hotel employee entering my room using the hotel's spare key. This happened just an hour after I had checked in.'
He said he reviewed the footage, informed management, and the employee was later fired.
He added: 'This is the second time this has happened to me in Bali. The first time I did not have a camera to record the room, so I lost around 300 EUR. The hotel was very responsive and took immediate action.'
Aside from firing the employee, hotel management also gave Aatu three complimentary nights of accommodation.
He said: 'The employee was fired and the hotel offered me three free nights. But this is another reminder: do not leave valuables in your room, even if you are only stepping out to eat at the hotel restaurant.
'And for those wondering why I left money in such a visible place, no one should have any reason to enter my room. I always leave money in front of the camera so that anyone taking it is recorded.
' I also hope it discourages anyone from searching through my bags further.'
