Ford Scales Back Big EV Plans, Shifts Focus to Hybrids and Gas Vehicles. Ford says it is stepping away from plans to build large electric vehicles, citing weaker-than-expected demand and recent regulatory changes under President Donald Trump. Instead, the US carmaker will redirect investment toward smaller, more affordable EVs, as well as hybrid and traditional gas-powered vehicles. The shift is expected to cost Ford nearly $20 billion in profits, but the company says the business case for large electric models has faded due to high costs, soft demand and changing regulations. CEO Jim Farley said the move is driven by customers and aims to make Ford more resilient and profitable, with a renewed focus on trucks, vans and hybrids. As part of the change, Ford will scrap plans for a fully electric F-150, redesigning it as a hybrid, and cancel a new electric van project. The decision mirrors similar pullbacks across the US auto industry, as EV adoption lags behind Europe and China and government incentives are rolled back.
