YouTube creator, 54, arrested over homemade gun sales
A YouTuber has been arrested for selling illegal firearms online in Thailand.
Gun enthusiast Anucha, 54, reportedly advertised air rifles and weapon parts on his YouTube channel before police stormed his home in Nakhon Sawan province on December 23.
Footage shows cops sweeping through the residence, where they seized a haul of air rifles, 54 lead pellets, 340 rounds of .22 LR ammunition, a silencer, gun barrels, magazines, and various firearm-related accessories.
The vlogger was arrested and charged with manufacturing, assembling, and distributing firearms or ammunition for trade without permission and with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
The Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau said the raid came amid a crackdown on technology-related crimes in Thailand, including illegal online sales of firearms.
Anucha allegedly admitted to assembling the rifles himself, selling each at 16,000 baht (381 GBP) online. He claimed he made 30,000 baht (715 GBP) a day from the lucrative racket.
Police said the suspect had previously been arrested in October, but was released on bail before he continued his illegal business.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Siriwit Mahattanawisit of the Takhli Police Station said: 'We handed him and the seized evidence over to the inquiry officer for legal action.
‘We will further investigate the origin of the firearm parts and identify related individuals in order to prosecute them.'
Thailand has one of the highest gun ownership and gun homicide rates among Southeast Asian nations.
Though Thai authorities have vowed to tighten gun control, there are around 4 million unregistered guns, often smuggled from war-torn countries, in circulation, the Ministry of Interior said in 2023.
