Spain: Three Massive Waterspouts Tear Through Spanish Coastline
Puerto de Mazarrón, Spain - December 28, 2025 A rare and terrifying meteorological spectacle unfolded on December 28, 2025, as three massive waterspouts formed simultaneously over the Mediterranean Sea, captured on video by local resident Iban del Banco from his balcony. Under stormy, heavily overcast skies, tall, narrow funnel clouds descended sharply from dark clouds to the sea, stirring spray and churning water. The central funnel was the most prominent and persistent. In the foreground, rooftops, trees, and dim town lights framed the dramatic scene, streaked with heavy rain. Del Banco captioned the footage: "Three tornadoes on the coast of Mazarrón in Murcia right now! How scary." Eyewitnesses and media reports indicate that between 2 and 7 waterspouts appeared off Puerto de Mazarrón amid red and orange alerts for severe thunderstorms, torrential rain, and potential tornadoes. At least two touched land between 5 and 6 PM, quickly intensifying into weak tornadoes along the port and promenade. The tornadoes hurled large metal roof sheets, terrace furniture, awnings, sails, boat parts, fishing nets, and street fixtures into the air, some landing over a kilometer inland. One car was displaced ten meters into fishing nets, though the driver remained unharmed. Restaurant terraces were destroyed, a warehouse roof ripped off, yachts damaged, and street lamps toppled. Cleanup began immediately, and fishing boats were grounded the following day. Remarkably, no injuries were reported. Eyewitnesses described the event as "absolute madness," an "apocalyptic" roar, and scenes reminiscent of "the end of the world." This extreme storm was part of a broader deadly system affecting southern and eastern Spain that weekend, causing flash floods and fatalities elsewhere, while Mazarrón suffered major material damage to its waterfront and marina.
