National Diet building, pedestrians, traffic Storyline The international community should stay on high alert against the possible rise of militarism in Japan following the recent erroneous and aggressive remarks made by Japanese officials, said some Latin American experts. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is under growing domestic and international pressure after suggesting that Japan may respond with force if the Chinese mainland uses military means against Taiwan for national reunification. While speaking at a parliamentary session last month, she described such a scenario as a "survival-threatening situation" for Japan, implying potential armed intervention in the Taiwan Strait. Also recently, a senior official in charge of security and defense at the Japanese Prime Minister's Office told reporters that Japan should have nuclear weapons. Japanese defense minister later said that they left open the possibility of Japan reviewing its non-nuclear principles in the future. Rachel Arencibia, researcher at the Center for International Politics Research in Cuba, said these remarks are not isolated and will undermine international order. "Japan appears to be instrumentalizing militarization as a pretext for so-called 'legitimate self-defense' and integrating it into its foreign policy framework. These statements are not isolated incidents and will inevitably impact the international order and regional order in particular," she said. "Regarding Japan, we observe a series of contradictory practices, particularly concerning the three non-nuclear principles, namely, not possessing, manufacturing or introducing nuclear weapons. Recent statements from the Japanese side completely violate this policy and may worsen regional security situations," said Manuel Camilo Gonzalez, an expert on international relations at Javeriana University in Colombia. Professor Edgar Soriano of the National Autonomous University of Honduras warned that Japan's push toward militarism is a dangerous gamble. "The Japanese government's attempt to revive the persistent specter of populism and militarism poses a grave threat to global stability and exposes its extreme irresponsibility in the current situation. Embarking on a confrontational path will create dangerous regional imbalances that could trigger violent conflict - an outcome no one desires," he said.
