MACUGNAGA, PIEDMONT REGION, ITALY (DECEMBER 30, 2025) (USERS MUST CREDIT ITALIAN FIRE BRIGADE – DO NOT OBSCURE LOGO-FOR EDITORIAL USE ONLY) A cable car malfunction at a ski resort in northern Italy injured four people and left around 100 passengers stranded at high altitude for several hours Tuesday, Dec. 30, authorities said.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:25 a.m. local time at the Macugnaga resort in which is close to the village of Macugnaga in the Piedmont region when one cabin failed to stop properly and struck a barrier at the arrival station.
Two cabins were involved in the accident. Three of the 15 passengers in the upper cabin sustained injuries, while the operator in the lower cabin was also hurt, according to firefighters.
Approximately 100 people, including children, were left stranded at an altitude of about 2,800 meters. Helicopter evacuation operations were launched immediately, with all passengers safely brought down to the valley by shortly before 3 p.m.
None of the injuries were life-threatening, authorities confirmed. The most serious case involved a 59-year-old man who suffered an arm wound, while others sustained minor abrasions. Six people received medical attention in total.
Ski slopes in the area were closed and the cable car system was shut down pending further technical checks.
The cable car serving the Monte Moro Pass was originally built in 1962 but underwent a major overhaul at the beginning of 2023.
