Visitors offered prayers by throwing coins at the shrine, following traditional customs observed at the beginning of the year in Japan.
Many worshippers also took part in New Year rituals that include drawing horoscope fortunes, a practice traditionally carried out during the first three days of the year.
The shrine remained crowded throughout the day as worshippers marked the New Year with prayers and customary rituals.
