6. EMERGENCY TEAMS WORKING AROUND DERAILED TRAIN ASANSOL, INDIA - DECEMBER 27: At least eight wagons of a freight train derailed late Saturday near Asansol in India, Eastern Railway officials said, injuring the locomotive driver and disrupting rail traffic on adjacent routes.
The incident occurred between Lahaban and Simulthala stations on the Eastern Railway network at around 11:25 p.m. on Dec. 27, near the 344/05 kilometer post, according to railway authorities.
Officials said several of the derailed wagons toppled off a bridge after leaving the tracks, complicating recovery work and forcing restrictions on nearby lines.
The derailment triggered knock-on delays for passenger services in the area, with disruptions reported on the busy Delhi–Howrah corridor as trains were rerouted or held while clearance operations began.
Railway teams were dispatched to the site to restore the line and remove the derailed wagons, while authorities said an assessment was underway to determine the cause of the accident.
