1. VARIOUS DRONE SHOTS OF SUMELA MONASTERY ON STEEP CLIFF, BLANKETED WITH SNOW
2. WIDE SHOTS OF MONATERY AND VISITORS (2 SHOTS)
TRABZON, TÜRKİYE - JAN. 2: The ancient Sumela Monastery in Türkiye's northern Trabzon province presented a stunning winter spectacle after recent snowfall blanketed the historic site, as severe winter conditions continue to affect large parts of the country.
Perched dramatically on steep cliffs 300 meters (984 feet) above the lush Altindere Valley, the fourth-century monastic complex—also known as the Monastery of the Virgin Mary—was transformed into a picturesque winter landscape, with drone footage captured Friday showcasing the snow-covered monument carved directly into the rock face of Mount Karadag.
The monastery, which sits on UNESCO's Tentative World Heritage List, has been the subject of extensive preservation efforts in recent years. After an 88-year hiatus, the site was reopened for religious practice in August 2010, marking a significant milestone in its modern history.
Located in Trabzon's Macka district, Sumela Monastery has long been a major draw for both domestic and international tourists throughout the year.
The monastery complex, with its unique architectural integration into the natural rock formation, continues to stand as one of Türkiye's most distinctive historical landmarks, attracting attention particularly during winter months when snow enhances its dramatic setting.
