UNCAPTIONED: X Restricts Grok AI Image Editing to Paid Users After Deepfake Backlash
X Restricts Grok AI Image Editing to Paid Users After Deepfake Backlash. Elon Musk’s platform X restricted image editing features on its AI tool Grok to paid subscribers following backlash over the creation of sexualised deepfake images. The change came after reports that Grok complied with requests to digitally undress people in images without their consent, prompting widespread criticism. According to BBC reporting, Grok now informs users that only paying subscribers can access image editing, with names and payment details required. The restriction followed mounting pressure from the UK government over concerns that the AI tool was generating unlawful images, including of children. Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the content as “disgraceful” and “disgusting,” and said regulators had full backing to act. Government sources told the BBC they expected Ofcom to use all powers available under the Online Safety Act, including potential access restrictions. Ofcom can seek court orders to prevent platforms from operating or raising funds if they are found to facilitate illegal content. X has not commented publicly on the changes, as scrutiny continues over how generative AI tools should be regulated.
