The local action in Amiens mirrors larger mobilizations across Europe on the same day, with thousands of farmers, many bringing tractors, staging protests in Brussels and other cities against the EU-Mercosur agreement and broader EU agricultural reforms, including changes to the Common Agricultural Policy. Demonstrators in Brussels faced police responses as they converged on EU institutions to press their demands amid a major EU leaders’ summit discussing the pact.

Farmers’ anger is compounded by ongoing frustrations over the government and EU response to a bovine lumpy skin disease outbreak, which has led to costly vaccinations and culls — a flashpoint in the broader rural discontent driving this surge of protests.

This coordinated wave of agricultural protests reflects deepening unease within Europe’s farming communities over trade liberalization, disease management policies, and perceived threats to rural livelihoods.
