A bungling hotel guest hung a shirt on a fire alarm sprinkler, setting off water jets that flooded the room.

The traveller had washed his clothes and used the mechanism's protruding nozzle from the ceiling to air-dry them, but the system was triggered in Shenzhen, China.

Footage shows water spraying from above, drenching the floor and furniture on January 26.

The water leaked to the lower floors, damaging electrical items and electronics in several rooms.

A police officer said: 'This unusual incident shows the importance of respecting fire safety equipment.'

Authorities confirmed the guest was asked to cover repair costs totalling some 150,000 RMB.
