Officials in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia ordered about 1.5 million people to evacuate a lengthy stretch of coastline on Monday, September 10, ahead of Hurricane Florence’s potentially catastrophic landfall.

The Category 4 hurricane has been rapidly intensifying during its journey across the Atlantic, bringing heavy downpours and flooding along its way. This video shows a flooded street at Ashbury Square in Bluefield, Virginia on Monday night.

Schools and government officers across 26 counties in Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina have shut to accommodate an influx of people in need of shelter. Forecasts state that torrential rains across the broader region are likely to bring significant flooding to low-lying areas, including to communities more than 100 miles inland.

Florence is set to make landfall in Wilmington, North Carolina, on Thursday.
