A crazed local hijacked a crane and allegedly killed one worker at a construction site in China.

The unnamed man reportedly jumped into the excavator and took control of it after it was left unattended by staff in Zhengzhou city, Zhejiang province, on December 14.

The workers had left the key in its ignition to take a break.

Footage shows the heavy equipment spinning around near a carpark and overturning a car.

Local media reported that one worker was killed when he was hit by the crane's arm while trying to stop the hijacker.

Police later arrived to calm the man down, but were forced to shoot him dead an hour later after their verbal attempts to end his rampage failed.

Authorities said they are still investigating the man's identity and motives.
