A monsoon storm caused traffic chaos when it flooded a major motorway in the Philippines on Thursday afternoon.

Footage shows the deluge swamping a portion of the South Luzon Expressway leading into Manila on July 13.

A truck was seen stalled in the middle of the road due to the height of the water.

Motorist Albert Go, who drove through the flood, said: 'It rained here in the Sucat area heading to Bicutan. No one can pass. A truck stalled. It means no one can enter or exit.'

In a 2 pm bulletin, the Office of Civil Defense said that a low pressure area had caused the torrential rain. It said: 'Multiple areas in NCR particularly in the cities along the SLEX Alabang viaduct such as Taguig, Parañaque, Muntinlupa were affected.

'The flooding receded around 10:00 AM; however, localized flooding at the gutter level persisted in certain areas.'

The Philippines and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are approaching their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
