A 69-year-old man plunged into a pond in just 20 seconds to save a drowning toddler after he mistook floating weeds for solid ground in southern China.

Video filmed in Yichun City in Jiangxi Province on August 30, shows a 3-year-old boy misjudging a step and plummeting into a pond over a metre deep, while his 5-year-old sister immediately panicked.

The girl cried out for help, but when no immediate assistance was forthcoming, she ran desperately to find an adult.

It was at this heart-stopping moment that 69-year-old Leng Guofa emerged as an unexpected hero.

“Upon realising someone was in distress, I didn’t think twice. I just rushed down to help,” Leng Guofa recounted. In his haste, he didn’t even pause to empty his pockets, forgetting his phone and wallet, and took a bold dive to rescue the child.

The timeline was brief yet profound. From the moment he saw the boy's fall, to his rapid descent into the water, and finally, lifting the boy to safety, Leng Guofa took a mere 20 seconds.

The grandmother of the rescued boy, Qian Binglan, couldn't hold back her gratitude. “We owe so much to Mr Leng. Without his timely intervention, I dread to think what could have happened to my grandson.” She further added that the child's mother has health issues and the father works away from home.

That fateful afternoon, as she was feeding her baby, her two grandchildren played near the door. The seemingly harmless pond, masked by floating weeds, became an unsuspected trap for the curious three-year-old.

Thankfully, due to the valiant efforts of their neighbour, Leng Guofa, the child is now safe and sound.
