A torrential flash flood swept away cars as a monsoon storm lashed a neighbourhood in the Philippines.

Rains intensified by the southwest monsoon battered Cebu City in Cebu province, spawning floods that submerged roads on September 13.

Footage shows the rubbish-filled deluge surging down a street in San Jose town. The currents washed away a black Toyota Bb, and had caused a parked van and a multicab to crash into each other.

Resident Rondie Cortes said: 'I took the video in front of our driveway. It was raining quite heavily at around 3:45 pm.

'The flood was so severe that both the Hi-ace and the multicab were drifting in it before crashing. It happened around 15 metres away from our house. The black Toyota stalled in the middle of the road. We called rescuers for help because the occupants inside were panicking.'

The Philippines and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
