Footage reportedly showing local residents stepping in to help repair the A591 road in Cumbria following flooding and landslides.

According to the filmer, Storm Desmond destroyed a section of the road between Grasmere and Keswick earlier in December.

"The military cleared 1,000 tonnes of rubble off the road in three days following the damaging floods, but since the army left, there has been little progress in getting the major road re-opened," he later wrote online.

This footage shows diggers and local residents helping to get the road back into action after Christmas.

Locals have stepped in to start fixing the A591 whilst the County Council & National Government procrastinate over milestones, timescales and budgets.

The A591 carries an estimated 5-7000 cars per day and is the major North / South artery in the Lake District.

Rory Stewart, Floods Minister will visit the A591 tomorrow discussing the possibility with the Secretary of State of handing the responsibility for these infrastructure projects to Highways England.

The visit will coincide with a formal announcement confirming the release by central government of a funding package worth £40m for repairs to flood-damaged roads and bridges.

Work to mend the A591 and investigate restoring Pooley Bridge and Eamont Bridge is due to begin in the new year.
