Since Storm Desmond in December 2015 washed away a large section of the A591, Grasmere and the South Lakes has been cutoff from Keswick & the north lakes requiring lengthy diversions. It has been estimated to have cost around £1m per day in lost business across Cumbria because of the closure of this vital road.

Today the road was re-opened by the school children from Grasmere school & by Rory Stewart the floods minister. Members of the local community were the first to drive across the newly repaired road along with the 555 bus from Keswick.

(The school children are from Grasmere CofE Primary school. Permissions have been given for footage. School contact is Jonathan Smith - http://www.grasmereschool.com/ - 015394 35313 )
