Thousands of starling preform their sky-dance against a moody sky

This incredible sight when starlings gather together at dusk in their tens of thousands and put on this amazing acrobatic display are called murmurations.

This starling roost is next to Tarn Sike Cumbria Wildlife Trust nature reserve in the Westmorland Dales Cumbria UK.

This amazing wildlife spectacle as the huge flock of starlings perform their aerial acrobatics against the moody evening sky is enjoyed by many local people and visitors to this beautiful area. Most evenings during the winter up to 30 people of all ages can be seen just looking into the sky with cries of "WOW" at the starling's amazing proformance. Some have cameras or phones to record one of the most spectacular nature sights in the UK.

Not all are happy that the starlings are here though. The landowner of the conifer plantation where the birds roost for the night says the birds are killing the trees and the grass in the nearby hay meadow with their toxic droppings. So they have been trying to move the starlings away with a very loud bird scarer as the birds come in to roost. But from my observations the starlings are so determined to stay, their seem to just ignore the loud bang which goes off every fifteen minuets ! If they only waited for two or three weeks, the birds would be moving on to Eastern Europe and Russia to breed anyway.
