Electric drill destroyed in puff of smoke in science class room

Buy video

Science Teacher Jacob Strickling clamped an electric drill to a bench and clamped the drill end so it couldn't turn. He then turned the power on to demonstrate an important science principle to his Physics class.
Normally when an electric motor turns it produces a back electromotiveforce which limits the current flow in the coils. If the motor is stopped from turning, an excessive current flows in the motor producing a lot of heat. It doesn't take long before the heat melts the insulation on the wires causing smoke to erupt out of the motor.
The excitement of the students and the teacher can be heard in the background as the drill starts spewing smoke, and then eventually pops with a flash of flame.
This will be one lesson the Physics students won't forget!
