This is the terrifying moment a King Cobra made a daring leap for freedom - after being caught inside a driver's car engine.

Suppachai Sangthong, 25, spotted the deadly serpent after his DOG started barking loudly at the vehicle while it was parked up in Pathum Thani, Thailand, on May 22.

The motorist was about to drive home but checked the bonnet - recoiling in horror when he saw the snake staring back at him.

Suppachai slammed shut the hood and called rescuers who initially made light work of catching the cobra - until it reared up and escaped from the sack.

Footage shows the killer reptile leaping in the air towards the head of the pest controller.

Suppachai said: ''I'm very grateful to my dog for sensing the snake. If my dog hadn't started barking I would have drove home with the snake in the car.''

Rescue worker Siri Wattana said: ''We found the cobra inside the black Isuzu pick-up truck. We caught it but it had a lot of energy and jumped out.''

The team eventually caught the snake for the second time and released it back into its natural habitat several miles away.
