Certain insects are able to generate their own bioluminescent light-sources utilising luciferase enzymes in order to advertise their presence to potential mates. This short film illustrates a solitary Mediterranean Pale Glow-worm Beetle Nyctophila reichii advertising her wares by a roadside in the Ardèche, South of France. As the larvae of these insects feed on snails they inhabit calcium-rich habitats. She was observed on most nights for about a week but on none of these occasions did she appear to have attracted any mates.
