Thunderstorm Approaching Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport

Buy video

OR Tambo International Airport (code JNB) is Johannesburg’s main international airport and is situated in the eastern plateau area of South Africa, known as the Highveld. Johannesburg is one of the world’s 50 largest cities, and is situated in the highveld at an altitude of about 1700 metres (5,700 feet). Johannesburg has a fairly mild subtropical highland climate that is sunny in summer (October to April), with hot days culminating in often violent afternoon thunderstorms with heavy rain. This video was shot as a developing thunderstorm approached the airport from the west over the Kelvin coal-fired power station and the complex of freeways, and then engulfed the airport in rain within a span of eight minutes. The cooling towers at the Kelvin power station almost disappeared from view in the pelting rain.
