This is one of the many procession in Spain on the holy week of Santa Semana, this is the week leading up to Easter Day. The processions last many hours and go on till the early morning. People of all ages will take part including young children.
The processions are a very sombre and quiet occasion, and added with the costumes give an extremely eyry feeling. The familiar cone hoods and robes bare a close resemblance to that of the Ku Klux Klan, however these robes pre date the Klans outfits by many hundreds of years. The hoods are called Capirote and worn in penance during the holy week, the worshippers also carry heavy statutes of religious figures through the streets for hours on end.
Easter day marks the end of the processions and the atmosphere changes to a much more light hearted mood. Statues of Mary and Jesus are marched through town to meet each other in the main square, when they meet hundreds of sweets are thrown to the crowds and the celebrations begin.
