A courting, clucking pair of wet Yellow-billed Hornbills
Southern Yellow-billed Hornbills (Tockus leucomelas) are common in the savanna of southern Africa, and are found in dry thornveldt and woodlands as well as in urban parks and gardens. Yellow-billed Hornbills are omnivorous, foraging mainly on the ground for fruits, seeds, large invertebrates and sometimes lizards. Their beaks are huge in comparison to their body size, hence them being called “Flying Bananas” by some people. This wet pair of Hornbills was courting on a bare branch after rain om the Mphongolo Loop in the northern part of Kruger Park in South Africa. Their clucking calls increased in intensity in tandem with the energy of their display to each other.
