A feast of parrots! Gorgeous, tiny Purple-crowned Lorikeets at a birdbath
Tiny Purple-crowned Lorikeets (Glossopsitta porphyrocephala) are found in tall eucalypt forests, open eucalypt woodlands, coastal scrub and mallee vegetation in southern Australia. They usually feed in the forest canopy on nectar from the blossoms of various Eucalyptus and Melaleuca species. Purple-crowned Lorikeets are more easily heard than seen, as their noisy flocks feed and move through the canopy in tall eucalypt forests. I was fortunate to be able to video this wary pair of Purple-crowned Lorikeets as they drank at the feather-filled birdbath at the Stirling Range Retreat on the edge of Stirling Range National Park in southern Western Australia. I really like their vertical take-offs!
