This is the astonishing moment a cobra continues to flares up its hood and fights with a pet dog - even after being cut into two pieces.

An adult cobra sneaked into the home of Shankar Prasad Tripathy in Jeypore town of Odisha on November 10.

Tripathy's pet dog named 'Doggy' took on the intruder and a ferocious fight ensued between them.

Shankar hurriedly called a snake rescuer Krushna Keshab Sarangi to come and catch the snake.

But by the time Sarangi arrived Doggy had won the battle and torn the snake into two pieces.

Sarangi was stunned to find the cobra with its hood raised and trying to keep the dog at bay despite having lost the lower body.

The snake died after 20 minutes from blood loss and respiratory distress.

Tripathy said: “Our pet dog killed the cobra and saved our lives. The snake tried to bite it at least twice, but Doggy managed to dodge it.”

Sarangi said: “The dog was very aggressive, did not let me also inside. It has bitten at least eight people till now."

Founder of Snake Helpline Subhendu Mallik said: Though dogs have been domesticated for thousands of years, they retain their hunting instinct. Even if a dog faces a cobra in a jungle, a fight may follow."
