A two-month-old baby froze to death during a cold spell in northern Thailand.

Benjamas Butnian took her son, Adithep Puengjampa, to bed in Roi-Et province last Thursday (December 5).

The following morning she found the boy was dead - one of four people to have frozen to death in Thailand this month amid plunging temperatures.

Medics believe the baby's death was caused by "cold stress" on his body from the relatively low temperatures of 14C at the time.

The sobbing mother said that she fell asleep while she was covering her two-month-old son with a blanket for the cold night, then found her infant motionless when she woke up.

After the mother found the boy was not breathing, she rushed him to the hospital where medics confirmed he was dead.

The devastated mother said: "I wrapped my son with a thick blanket and I believed it was warm enough for him. But he did not breathe or move when I tried to wake him up in the morning."

Dr Ployrung Anantachaiwanit from Roi-Et Hospital confirmed the infant had suffered from the cold weather. They blamed 'cold stress' for the death.

She said: "The baby may not have been unable to adjust to the cold temperatures during the night, which put his body into a state of shock. Parents should take great care of their children through the winter to ensure they have plenty of protection.''

The mother added: "Adithep would have been two-months-old this week. It is unbearable that my son has already gone."

In addition to the death of the baby, Thai man Prasarn Homthong, 38, was discovered dead by his eight-year-old daughter, Panwira Noipha, on December 7 when he did not respond to her attempts to wake him up.

The temperature in Bueng Kan province, also in the northeast of Thailand, had dropped to 9C that night. Homthong had three blankets to keep himself warm.

Two other Thais have died during the cold spell.

Cold stress is caused when the body has to work harder to preserve its core temperature when the skin and internal organs become cooler. The changes in the body can result in a sudden shock, which can be fatal.

Medics recommend that babies are given more breast milk to help to keep their bodies warm.
