An 80-year-old woman from north India named Kushmavati has gained fame for her strange diet of eating sand, but claims that it gives her energy and keeps her healthy.

Kushmavati who lives in Cholapur in the outskirts of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh is locally known as 'sand dadi' in her village, and has been eating white sand since she was 15-years-old.

Reportedly she has an entire process of cleaning the sand, by keeping it in a pot and using the sun to dry it, then eating the 'purified' sand this way.

According to Kushmavati she had a major stomach upset when she was 15, and went to a local healer, where she was advised to drink milk and eat sand to stay healthy.

From that day since she has eaten sand with every meal, and now works caring for chickens at a poultry farm.

Kushmavati recalls saying when she got married, everyone including her in-laws asked her to stop eating sand, so she hid her habit from them. Even children used to tease her, but now people in her village have gotten used to it.

Sand is not healthy to eat in large quantities as it cannot be digested by the body, and can even cause bowel obstructions in sufficient quantities.
