Subway passengers given free books for Christmas in Bangkok
Subway passengers in Bangkok were given free books as a Christmas treat.
Dozens of locals collected one of 3,500 gift-wrapped presents from the Thai capital's Chatuchak MRT station.
The event takes place on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Only passengers with a rail card and Thai nationality ID card can collect the girl.
Staff from Matichon publishing staff said this is the second time they hosted the free book fair after last year's success.
One of the organisers, Khun Ped, said: "The event last year was successful, so we decided to do it again this year. This time we provide 3,500 books, which 1,750 given out each day.
"Everybody has enjoyed it today and shown a lot of interest. I hope everyone enjoys their books.''
The event is to encourage reading among Thai people. According to UNESCO, Thailand's literacy rate has dropped in recent years. The male literacy rate is 94.66 per cent and for females it is 91.19 per cent.
One of the travellers who collected a free book, Nong Friend, said: “Being given books is perfect, because it can encourage people to read more. I will visit the book festival again, if it is held next time.”
