Primatologist Noel Rowe photographs Sykes' monkey mother and infant on roof of United Nations Office at Nairobi during IPS2018.
Primatologist Noel Rowe is seen here photographing a female Sykes' monkey Cercopithecus albogularis grooming her infant on the roof of the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON) - not the usual sort of place for primatology field studies! Every two years the International Primatological Society brings together scientists, educators and conservationists to present papers and share their experiences and passion for primates. This usually includes a field trip to see any non-human primates in the area, but on this occasion the primates came to see the primatologists. The IPS Congress in 2018 was hosted by the UN Great Apes Survival Partnership Secretariat - www.UN-GRASP.org - and the resident population of Sykes' monkeys was a highlight of intervals between the power-point presentations.
This species, also known as the Samango monkey or white throated guenon, is a close relative of the blue monkey and golden monkey of the Virunga Volcanoes (coming up soon in a future #BrightenYourDay video; this one is No.31 in the series). To learn more about the 638 species of primate currently recognised, check out Noel Rowe's amazing books and website: https://www.alltheworldsprimates.org/...
Note: because of the #Covid19 #pandemic, the 2020 IPS Congress has been postponed until 2021 - details here: http://internationalprimatologicalsociety.org/announcements.cfm
