Curious Kangaroo approaches campers in Cape Range National Park, Australia

The Euro or Western Wallaroo (Macropus robustus erubescens) is a stocky, medium-sized Kangaroo that usually inhabits rocky country. Unlike most other Kangaroos, Euros have shaggy coats and fairly short legs that help them move across broken rocky terrain. Euros are herbivores, eating mainly soft-textured grasses, foliage of some shrubs and some coarse tussock grasses. They rely on caves or large overhangs for shelter from the intense heat during the day. This male Euro broke the normal pattern of behaviour – it was at Mandu North Campground near the beach in the Cape Range National Park, standing in the shade of a Tamarisk tree when we arrived. He waited calmly as we got out of our vehicle, apparently hoping to be fed. When we didn’t respond quickly enough it hopped away, disappearing into the sand dunes nearby.
