Authorities in West Sumatra are now using a track and trace system on Android devices for those flouting the mandatory mask rules.

Footage from October 19 shows police officers collating data of people not wearing masks then inputting the details into a phone. Additional shots show a citizen sweeping the street as their punishment.

The head of regional regulations for West Sumatra province, Robby Mulia, said: "The punishment for people who do not wear masks is the threat of two days of imprisonment or a fine of 250 thousand rupiahs, but these rules are enforced if they are caught repeatedly violating them."

Robi explained that the Android-based system records and stores information, including photos, in a database. This information is regional authorities offices for information and communication.

Offenders on their first violation will be punished by sweeping the street but upon a further breach, they will be fined 100,000 rupiahs.

A third violation results in a choice between a two-day stint in prison or a 250,000 rupiahs fine.
