Sheets of ice washing up from a lake in northwestern China makes an intense crackling noise.

In the video, shot in Bortala Prefecture in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region on December 18, sheets of ice on the surface of Sayram Lake were shunted onto the shore.

According to reports, the flowing water in the lake cannot form a big chunk of ice during winter so the thin ice was pushed to the shore by the water.

The phenomenon lasts for around a week to 10 days.

The video was provided by local media with permission.
