A family in Bhubaneswar, eastern India, found a large monitor lizard hiding inside their toilet.

After hearing a strange noise from their washroom, the family found a monitor lizard. They locked the doors and opens the windows hoping the reptile would make its own way out.

The monitor lizard was still inside after five days so the family called officials to remove the animal.

Rajesh Sutar, a volunteer, managed to capture and released the lizard.

He said: "The 4-feet-long monitor lizard had entered the bathroom by climbing the pipe outside the wall. But it failed to take the same route to escape as it could not climb the glazed tiles fitted on the walls."

Subhendu Mallik, General Secretary of Snake Helpline, said: "The family was in trauma. I am glad we could help them. When you are stuck with a wild animal, always reach out to experts without losing time.”

This footage was filmed on July 5.
