Ugandans share their experience of surviving through the lockdown in Kampala
This footage was filmed and produced 3 July 2021.
Uganda has reimposed a 42-day lockdown as coronavirus infections surge in the East African country. President Yoweri Museveni said in his Friday night address that he was tired of receiving calls about deaths, but critics say he presented a wish list that would instead worsen the situation for Ugandans.
The video shows people raising their concerns about the effect of coronavirus lockdown in Uganda. For example, many businesses were shut down, bars have not been operating since the last year lockdown, some people are going to die of hunger as they can't work durind lockdown, students have not been studying for one and a half years since schools were closed.
Moreover, starvation and hunger are resulting into other diseases and police is taking advantage of the situation collecting money (bribe) from citizens during curfew hours, high crime rates so they are calling out for the government to come to their rescue since it promised could 19 relief funds to the vulnerable people.
Interviews:
1) Keys. Basically, the lockdown has not treated me any good. My name is Katajja Ramathan and I’m the speaker of Wamala parish and the head of medicine men and secondly I’m their spokesperson and vice chairman. They are not any well at all plus all my community members. People are broke. Lockdown has oppressed and downtrodden us since we are no longer accessing various goods and services. Our fellow workmates are no longer coming to work due to transportation. My wish is, they at least they uplift this lockdown. So that at least we can move from one place to another. I’m because we have patients in some districts but we were restricted. I got to know favour pull him with from moving to other districts, we only have to be in our districts I by the way the federal government should look through us, the leaders. Because our subjects think that the federal government gave us relief funds because we are under GISO. I won’t mention the name of my authority, but please think about we, your subordinates, put us into consideration. Maama phina… you should also come out. And also the district’s
2) My name is Kemigisha Sheena. I’m a student, I was in F3 before the first lockdown (last year).
It is now two years when I’m not going to school.
Besides studies, we are deliberately going to die of hunger, we have no food.
Yeah.
Our parents used to work in town but they now switched their businesses to home, which is a real setback in the business. Our father is home sitted, not working. Our mother is also home. We don’t have food.
Right, what do you expect us to do?
We don’t have any hope that schools will be opened soon.
Yeah, government, you should come to our rescue.
We are yet to die…government where are you?
I’m happy about nine the right please, schools should be opened, we are willing to follod the COVID-19 SOPS.
Government promised to give the vulnerable SOME covid-19 relief funds…please!
I heard that the COVID-19 relief funds are going to be given to specific people.
We are in this together. We are all affected…not specific people. Please, help us, thank you.
Yeah, my have one on that one.
3) Life has not been the same ever since the government imposed the lockdown.
Back then we used to earn some money.
We used to do part time jobs and earn some money.
We are currently not getting any clients, I wonder whether they are trimming off with razor blades.
Before the lockdown, I used to get clients who supported me and I earned some money, but they are nowhere to -------------.
I when you ask them to buy masks, they claim not to have money. One the government’s government or. And the worst part of it is that the saloon is in a rural area. I’m and most people are hand to mouth, they don’t have money for luxury. I can spend a day without receiving any client. Imagine.
I have a family which depends on me…what am I expected to do?
Things are just getting worse.
They we are only waiting for God’s miracle, maybe.
The state should also consider barbers when they are giving out the relief funds.
Life is just getting harder each day.
We should all be registered for the relief funds, we’re in this together. This is just way too much for all of us. Because of it how are we the situation…life…
I remain Ramathan Katajja. I got good grades at high school but I’m suffering as if I have never stepped in school. I’m going to have to flee. It is the fact. I have nothing to do, no way out to be. I earn ugx1000 to 2000 in a day (0,28-0,56$ per day). My customers are not there.
