A bridge collapsed following continuous heavy rains injuring one motorcycle rider in northern Thailand.

The structure was submerged in the deluge which made the soil around it soft and eventually caused it to give in in Kamphaeng Phet province on July 31.

Before the damage was reported to authorities, a motorcycle rider mistakenly passed through it and fell before locals rushed to help take him to a hospital.

One of the locals, Khun Boonsong, said: "There was a canal expansion nearby which accumulated rainwater and eroded parts of the bridge. We think that contributed to the collapse."

Residents had to take an alternative route which was at least 5 km longer but officials promised that the bridge would be repaired as soon as possible.
