Thousands of passengers were delayed on Monday night after more than 300 flights were grounded at an airport in Chicago as severe weather warnings were raised in several counties in Illinois.

Passenger John Cheng showed long queues of people rebooking their trips at Chicago O'Hare International Airport on August 9.

He said: 'All flights are pretty much cancelled tonight out of Chicago due to weather, tornadoes I hear. The rebooking line is literally a mile long.'

Delays averaged about 24 minutes, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation. A ground stop had also been issued at the airport for safety.
