Indonesian police officers were forced to disperse the demonstration of dozens of indigenous Papuans who held a demonstration in the courtyard of the Police office, Polresta Sorong City, West Papua, on Monday 19 July 2021.

Protesters did not have a demonstration permit and violated the health protocol rules applied by the Indonesian government.

"Currently, an emergency Community Activity Restriction (PPKM) has been implemented in the city of Sorong, so according to the applicable regulations in implementing PPKM, it is clear that there should be no gathering activities like this demonstration. We didn't give permission for the demonstration because we were worried that the Corona virus would spread at the gathering. If you want to convey aspirations, you can convey them according to the rules, but not through demonstrations in times when the area is being hit by a pandemic. We had advised not to take demonstrations, but people gathered anyway. We disband the demonstration firmly and according to the rule of law we because it violates the applicable legal rules. The demonstration didn't progress to other things, that's all. Once again I emphasize, our consideration is that we did not give permission for demonstrations for health reasons, there are no other considerations. You can see for yourself that the spike in cases of the spread of Covid 19 in the city of Sorong is very high".
