A heavy downpour lashed Japan as Typhoon Mindulle bore down on the country’s southeastern islands on Friday morning.

Footage shows intense rains battering Mikura-jima island on October 1.

Mindulle, Japan’s 16th typhoon, was classified as ‘very strong’ and ‘large’ by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). It was moving northeast at a speed of 35 kilometres per hour as of noon today, the national weather agency said.

The storm is not expected to hit mainland Japan but is forecasted to bring heavy rains and strong winds across the Izu islands, including Mikurajima, south of the densely-populated capital Tokyo throughout Friday. The islands may experience gusts of up to 216 kilometres per hour, and as much as 120 millimetres of rain, according to the JMA. Residents have been warned to stay on guard in the landslide-prone area.

Meanwhile, violent gusts and torrential rain will hit the Kanto and Tohoku regions until Saturday morning.

The typhoon is expected to weaken slightly while tracking north-northeast over the weekend.
